Healing All Our Diseases

God is the source of all healing - both by intervention in the nature of disease in our physical bodies as well as the normal restorative processes he wonderfully designed into our bodies.

For me, and probably for many in our church, this is the one phrase in the entire Psalm which I have dreaded.

God can heal all diseases. But He has chosen not to in every case and I'm still having trouble with that right now. It's going to take some real spiritual work - alone - again -and again - to deal with his sovereignty.

Why did you take Tom, Lord?

Within the context of this psalm David is reminding his soul of all God's benefits. As David lists those benefits, he's reminding his soul that all that's good in this life is from God. We live in a fallen world with broken bodies full of iniquities, diseases, and pits. The amazing thing is that God forgives any of our iniquities, that He heals any of our diseases, and that He redeems any of our lives from the pit. The emphasis is on God's goodness. His goodness to do any of this, as well as His goodness as the only source for any of this. In response to that goodness David blesses the Lord... he kneels before Him.

Maybe we can look at "diseases" from a spiritual aspect. This thought struck me so deeply in class that I have continued to ponder it throughout the day. I realize that we are physical beings and that physical healing is the first thing we think of especially since we are so familiar with pain. Also not one of us hasn't been deeply affected by the death and suffering of someone we care about deeply. But remember Jesus didn't come to make our bodies right. Granted I know that He can heal physically. There are numerous reports in Scripture and in our own time of Him doing this. He came to heal us spiritually. Remember his discussion with Pharisees regarding the paralytic..."Which is easier to say to the paralytic, 'Your sins are forgiven; or to say, Get up. pick up your pallet and walk?' (Mark 2:9) Remember also Jairus daughter...death to Jesus was only sleeping. I looked up the word diseases in Strongs when I got home and this word is only used twice. The other reference is in 2 Chron 21:19. Here it describes King Jehoram and the terrible disease that killed him. This was permitted by God because of his disobedience. Strongs referred to this as a malady. In the dictionary (Webster's unabridged, c.1954) the second definition for malady is a moral or mental defect or disorder. This brings me back to the point. The real problem with sin is spiritual not physical. Jesus came to set us free from the spiritual diseases that infect us (i.e. bitterness, anger, envy...) Once our sins are forgiven and we have received Him we literally have a new vitality about us. A person who has received Jesus is now able to get over the emotions, attitudes, and hurts of their past. Moral defects come as a result of sin. When Jesus heals us through the Cross we have new life.

Because I am a sinner and as much as I believe that God is sovereign, I still find myself unaccepting in the flesh of some of his acts.
I meant to indicate that for me, it takes time alone with God to overcome the rebellion I have in the flesh.

God is 100% faithful to fufill is promises. His lovingkindness is everlasting to all generations. We need to be careful not to take this "healing all our diseases" out of context. "healing"
as seen in Ps 103:3 was used only 3other times, all speaking of the Isrealites. Ex15:26, Ps 147:3, Isa 30:26 If Isreal was obedient keeping God's commands and refrain from idolatry, God would not bring on diseases brought on the Egyptians. I do not know of any promise that God promises to heal physically if we do this or that. Yes we are told to pray for healing, but is this in referance to confessing sin? We however have the glorious promise of 1Pet 2:24 "BY HIS WOUNDS YOU HAVE BEEN HEALED" We have the forgiveness of sins and the promise of eternal life. We can discouraged one another very easily by misrepresenting this passage as a universal promise.
